Temporal variability of the hydrographic changes on the Antarctic continental seas

This dataset contains anomalous time series of temperature and salinity profiles over 15 major continental shelf seas around Antarctica. The base data were generated by removing a spatially varying three-dimensional climatology from the raw hydrographic profile compilation used to construct the climatology. The resulting anomaly profiles were binned onto a regular spatial grid with 20 km spacing using a 200 × 200 km search area around each grid point and ordered chronologically within each bin. The binned anomaly profiles were subsequently used to construct time series for major Antarctic continental shelf seas. The dataset retains the vertical dimension of the source observations and provides a pan-Antarctic, observation-based representation of temporal variability in temperature and salinity throughout the water column.

Statement

The dataset was derived from the OCEAN ICE Southern Ocean hydrographic temperature and salinity profile compilation (DOI 10.17882/99787) and its associated three-dimensional Southern Ocean climatology (DOI 10.17882/103946). A spatially varying climatological mean was subtracted from the source hydrographic profiles to obtain temperature and salinity anomaly profiles. The anomaly profiles were binned onto a regular spatial grid with 20 km spacing, using a 200 × 200 km search area around each grid point, and ordered chronologically within each bin. These binned profiles were then aggregated within geographical polygons representing 15 major Antarctic continental shelf seas to construct multi-decadal anomaly time series while retaining the vertical dimension of the source observations.
