Temperature, salinity and current velocity data from two oceanographic moorings in the South Sandwich Trench
This dataset consists of year-long time series of calibrated data from two moorings deployed in the South Sandwich Trench between February 2024 and February 2025. The central mooring was situated at 60°12.85' S, 25°07.36' W and included nine instruments at depths between approximately 1450 m and 5950 m. Each file contains the data from a single instrument, either an ADCP current meter (current velocity), temperature sensor (temperature), or Microcat CTD (temperature, salinity). The files from the central mooring are:
SouthSandwichCentral_CurrentMeter_1454m.nc
SouthSandwichCentral_Temperature_Salinity_1455m.nc
SouthSandwichCentral_Temperature_2119m.nc
SouthSandwichCentral_CurrentMeter_2952m.nc

SouthSandwichCentral_CurrentMeter_4452m.nc
SouthSandwichCentral_Temperature_5200m.nc
SouthSandwichCentral_CurrentMeter_5944m.nc
SouthSandwichCentral_Temperature_Salinity_5945m.nc
Also included is a time series of temperature and current speed from a second mooring on the western side of the trench, at a location of 60°06.49' S, 25°18.54' W. While this mooring was not fully recovered, a temperature sensor and Acoustic Current Doppler Profiler (ADCP) were recovered that were at/near the seafloor for the entire deployment, at a depth of approximately 3960 m. The data current meter data includes only the absolute current speed, not the individual velocity components. The files from the western mooring are:
SouthSandwichWest_CurrentMeter_3957m.nc
SouthSandwichWest_Temperature_3957m.nc

The dataset consists of calibrated observations collected from two oceanographic moorings deployed in the South Sandwich Trench between February 2024 and February 2025. The central mooring included nine instruments deployed between approximately 1450 m and 5950 m depth, comprising ADCP current meters, temperature sensors and Microcat CTDs. A second mooring on the western side of the trench provided temperature and current-speed observations from instruments deployed at approximately 3960 m depth. The observations are distributed as individual NetCDF time-series files.
