Particle trajectories in the Weddell and Bellingshausen seas

This dataset includes the results of Lagrangian particle tracking experiments with Parsels model in the Weddell Sea. Virtual particles were released every 8 hours during a year at 10 m below the surface with the spatial step of 1° of the longitude-latitude grid on the Weddell Sea shelf, where the ocean is shallower than 1500 m. 3D hydrodynamic fields for the model forcing were taken from the WAOM model simulation results (u,v,w,T,S).

The following information for each particle is stored once every 5 days: longitude (lon in files), latitude (lat), time (time), depth (z), temperature (temp), salinity (sal), ice draft (ice), travelled distance (distance), ocean depth (dep).

All particles’ trajectories are divided by release time between six *.zip archives. Each *.zip archive contains results in NetCDF format for 20 years of simulations and can be considered as an independent data set with 1/6 of the total number of released particles.

Statement
The dataset was generated through Lagrangian particle tracking experiments using the Parcels model. Virtual particles were released every 8 hours during one year at 10 m below the surface on a 1° longitude-latitude grid over the Weddell Sea continental shelf, restricted to areas where ocean depth is less than 1500 m. Three-dimensional hydrodynamic fields from Whole Antarctica Ocean Model (WAOM) simulations, including horizontal and vertical velocity, temperature and salinity, were used to force the particle tracking model. Particle properties and positions were stored every 5 days over 20-year simulations. The trajectories were subsequently used to investigate ocean connectivity and water-mass pathways between the Weddell and Bellingshausen Seas and around the Antarctic Peninsula.
